Why Acid-Free Mat Board Matters
- Wood-pulp boards are acidic — they off-gas and stain artwork over time, creating yellow or brown borders around whatever they contact.
- Conservation boards are pH-neutral — 100% cotton rag or buffered alpha-cellulose boards won't migrate acids into your artwork.
- It costs almost nothing more — the difference in mat board cost is minimal. There's no reason to use non-archival materials on anything you care about.
- Color also matters — we guide you on which mat color pulls the right tones from your artwork, rather than fighting them.
