Oil Painting & Canvas Framing — Bergen County NJ

Original oil paintings. Acrylic on canvas. Commissioned portraits. Inherited artwork. We float-frame, liner-frame, and present canvas art the way it deserves — at our Hasbrouck Heights, NJ studio.

Framing Canvas Art Is Different — And We Know How

Canvas paintings are not paper prints. They breathe, they expand, they have texture and depth. Framing them incorrectly — pressing glass directly against the surface, using the wrong float gap, choosing a frame that competes with the brushwork — damages the piece and diminishes its impact. Framing them correctly makes the art the undeniable focal point of any room.

At Modern Memory Design in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, we've framed hundreds of original oil and acrylic paintings. We understand float gaps, liner frames, canvas keys, stretcher bar repair, and the art of choosing a moulding that enhances rather than fights the work.

Canvas Framing Options

🖼️ Floater Frame

The painting appears to float inside the frame with a visible gap between canvas edge and moulding. Modern, clean, gallery-style. No glass — the canvas breathes. Best for contemporary and abstract work.

🏛️ Liner Frame

A fabric-wrapped liner (linen or velvet) sits between canvas and outer moulding — a traditional fine art presentation. Used for Old Masters reproductions, portraits, and formal artwork.

🪵 Solid Wood Moulding

We carry solid hardwood and carved mouldings from our premium suppliers — not hollow veneers. The right moulding weight and profile matters for paintings that will hang for decades.

📐 Canvas Re-Stretching

Loose, sagging, or warped canvas? We re-stretch and rekey paintings onto new stretcher bars before framing — restoring proper tension and a flat, professional presentation.

🎨 Commissioned Portrait Framing

New portrait or commissioned piece that needs the right frame to complete it? We work with the artist's intent and the client's space to select a frame that elevates the work.

👴 Estate & Inherited Paintings

Family heirloom painting in a damaged or inappropriate frame? We rehouse it properly — cleaning, re-stretching if needed, and presenting it as the valuable piece it is.

Why No Glass on Oil Paintings?

Oil and acrylic paintings on canvas should generally not be glazed (covered with glass or acrylic). The reasons are practical and conservation-based: canvas needs to breathe, glass touching impasto or thick texture creates condensation points, and the visual effect of glass over a textured painting diminishes depth and character. Floater and liner frames are designed specifically for this — your painting is protected by the frame, not covered by glass.

There are exceptions — certain works on board or very thin canvas benefit from glazing. We'll advise you correctly when you bring the piece in.
