Back to School Wall Decor: 8 FramedArt.com Collections to Shop This Fall
Back-to-school shopping is mostly a list of things that wear out: notebooks, highlighters, a laundry hamper that will not survive May. Wall art is the one thing on the list that gets better with time — it moves from the dorm to the first apartment to the first real office, and it never needs replacing.
Our sister site FramedArt.com carries hundreds of thousands of ready-to-hang framed prints. Below are eight collections that consistently work for students, teachers, and anyone setting up a study space this fall — with specific pieces worth starting from.
A quick note on sizing before you shop: for a dorm or a small study nook, one large piece (18x24 or 24x36) plus four to six small ones is the sweet spot. Our dorm room picture frames guide breaks down every size and where it goes.
1. Abstract Art — the safest bet in a shared room
Abstract is the diplomat of wall art. It has no subject to argue about, it works with a roommate's completely different taste, and it reads as intentional rather than as a poster someone taped up. Shapes and color, no explanation required.
Featured: Fine Birch 2-Piece Framed Art Print Set by Allison Pearce — $549.99, on sale $357.49. A matched pair does the work of a gallery wall without any of the layout math.
Also worth a look: Soft Pebbles I by Ann Marie Coolick · Composition VIII, 1923 by Wassily Kandinsky · Untitled, 1967 by Mark Rothko · Butterfly Effect by Lina Alattar
2. Pop Art — for the loud side of the room
Big color, big graphics, zero subtlety. Pop art is what you buy when the room needs energy and the overhead lighting is doing its best to prevent that. It also photographs extremely well, which matters more than anyone admits.
Featured: Pop Art 2-Piece Framed Art Print Set by Howie Green — $569.99, on sale $370.49.
Also worth a look: Washing Machine by Roy Lichtenstein · Happynaut by Juan Sly · Graffiti Ballerina 2 by Marta Wiley · Beatles Pano by Dean Russo
3. Black & White Photography — grows up with you
Monochrome photography is the collection to buy if you want one purchase to last past graduation. It goes with every wall color, every frame finish, and every future apartment. Cityscapes especially hit the sweet spot between dorm-appropriate and adult.
Featured: Black and White 2-Piece Framed Art Print Set by Moises Levy — $569.99, on sale $370.49.
Also worth a look: NYC Nights by Nina Papiorek · Cityscape by Donnie Quillen · Eiffel Tower at Night by Christopher Bliss · 1927 Solvay Conference on Quantum Mechanics — a genuinely great pick for a physics or chem major

4. Space Art — the perennial study-desk favorite
Nebulas, star maps, and NASA archive imagery have been on student walls for fifty years and show no sign of stopping. They're also a rare category that works equally well in a dorm, a STEM classroom, and a home office.
Featured: Solar System Blueprint 2-Piece Framed Art Print Set by Wild Apple Portfolio — $589.99, on sale $383.49.
Also worth a look: Earthrise · Earth Seen from Apollo 17 · Starforming Region NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula · We Need You by NASA
5. Maps — homesickness, solved
The most personal category on this list. A framed map of your hometown, your campus city, or the place you're planning to move after graduation is the piece people ask about. Vintage city maps and blueprint-style prints look far more expensive than they are.
Featured: City Maps Black 4-Piece Framed Art Print Set by Laura Marshall — $709.99, on sale $461.49. Four cities, one cohesive wall.
Also worth a look: Antique World Map by Vision Studio · 1920 Pocket Map of Paris, Blueprint Style · City Map of Chicago · Birdseye View of Newark, New Jersey 1916 — for the NJ kids heading out of state
6. Music Art — personality without a poster
There's a real difference between a taped-up band poster and framed music art. Same enthusiasm, entirely different impression. Typographic music prints and instrument studies are the easiest entry point.
Featured: Six String 3-Piece Framed Art Print Set by Rob Delamater — $529.99, on sale $344.49. Three panels stack beautifully in a narrow vertical strip of wall.
Also worth a look: Life is a Mix Tape by Naxart · 80's Party by Naxart · Turn it Up XI by Kent Youngstrom · Acoustic Guitar by Marcus Prime
7. Vintage Posters — instant character on a blank wall
Vintage travel and advertising posters do something no modern print does: they make a brand-new, featureless room feel like it has history. Swiss ski posters and old rail advertisements are the reliable picks.
Featured: Vintage Seed Packets 2-Piece Framed Art Print Set by Studio W — $479.99, on sale $311.99.
Also worth a look: Zermatt Valais Suisse · St. Moritz · Take Your Dog by Rail · Pates Baroni, 1921 by Leonetto Cappiello
8. Word Art — for the desk you have to look at every day
Typographic and quote prints are the most-gifted category on this list — parents buying for a freshman, teachers decorating a classroom, coaches outfitting a locker room. Pick something with actual meaning rather than generic encouragement and it holds up all four years.
Featured: Word Definitions 2-Piece Framed Art Print Set by Jennifer Pugh — $469.99, on sale $305.49.
Also worth a look: What if You Fly by Marla Rae · Journey of a Thousand Miles Quote by Veruca Salt · Great Things — Van Gogh Quote · Practice Like You've Never Won by Seven Trees Design — a locker-room classic
