Museum Glass vs Regular Glass vs Acrylic for Picture Framing
Glazing protects framed work from dust and handling while influencing reflections, weight, safety and UV exposure. Here is how to choose between regular glass, specialty museum glass and framing acrylic.
Regular picture-frame glass
Standard clear glass is a familiar choice for photographs, posters and everyday prints. It provides a rigid, clear surface but can create noticeable reflections, adds weight and may break if a frame falls or is mishandled.
Non-glare and museum glass
Non-glare glazing is designed to reduce distracting reflections, but products differ in appearance and optical clarity. Museum-grade anti-reflective glazing typically offers improved clarity and reduced reflection compared with many standard options. UV protection depends on the actual product specification; do not assume all non-glare glass has the same UV performance.
Acrylic for large or shipped frames
Framing acrylic is lighter than glass and resists shattering, making it a practical choice for some oversized or shipped frames. It can scratch more readily, so follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. UV-filtering and anti-reflective acrylic variants are available, but not all acrylic sheets provide the same level of protection.
Which glazing should you choose?
| Priority | Consider |
|---|---|
| Everyday small frame | Standard glass when appropriate |
| Strong reflections | Anti-reflective glass or acrylic |
| Large frame or shipping | Acrylic, subject to size and specifications |
| Valuable, light-sensitive work | Conservation consultation and verified UV-filtering glazing |
Protecting art takes more than glazing
Keep framed pieces out of sustained direct sunlight where practical and consider artwork-specific mounting, backing and humidity. UV-filtering glazing reduces exposure but does not eliminate every source of deterioration. For valuable or irreplaceable work, ask about conservation approaches before choosing materials.
