Floater Frame vs Traditional Picture Frame

A traditional frame sits over the edges of your artwork. A floater frame sits around it, leaving a small reveal so the canvas appears to float inside the frame.

• Edge coverage: Traditional frames cover the canvas edge by up to 1/2 inch. Floaters leave the edges fully visible.

How to Install Your Canvas in a Floater Frame

1. Place the floater frame face-down on a clean, soft surface.
2. Center your stretched canvas inside the frame, art-side down.
3. Drive the included screws through the back of the frame into the canvas stretcher bars.
4. Flip the frame over and hang using standard picture-hanging hardware (D-rings and wire for medium and large sizes; sawtooth for the smallest).

Tip: keep the reveal even on all four sides — a quick measurement before driving the screws keeps everything square.

What size canvas does a floater frame fit?

Each floater frame is sized to match its named canvas dimension exactly. A 16x20 floater frame fits a 16x20 stretched canvas with the standard 1.25" depth.

What canvas depth do these frames work with?

All canvas floater frames here are designed for 1.25-inch deep (also called "standard depth" or "gallery wrap") stretched canvas.

Can I use a floater frame with a thin (0.75") canvas?

Our floaters are built for 1.25-inch deep canvases. A 0.75-inch canvas will sit recessed inside the frame, which some customers actually prefer for a deeper shadow line. If you want a flush fit, pair the frame with a 1.25-inch canvas, or contact us for a custom build.

Is mounting hardware included?

Yes — every frame ships with the screws and brackets needed to secure your canvas inside the frame.

How long until my frame ships?

Most canvas floater frames ship within 3–5 business days. Each frame is made to order in our New Jersey workshop.

Do you offer custom sizes?

Do floater frames come with glass?

No — stretched canvas is meant to be displayed without glazing, and floater frames are designed that way. The artwork is fully exposed inside the frame.

Can I paint or stain the frame myself?

Our four finishes are factory-applied for a durable, even coat, but the solid hardwood does accept paint or stain if you'd like to refinish. We recommend a light sanding first.
