Framing fabric, needlepoint, cross-stitch, and embroidery requires completely different skills than framing paper artwork. The piece must be properly stretched and tensioned before mounting โ without distorting the weave. At Modern Memory Design in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, we've been stretching and mounting textile works for years, and we understand how to handle delicate, irreplaceable pieces.
Whether it's a grandmother's finished needlepoint, a cross-stitch gift, vintage embroidery, or a piece of fabric with sentimental meaning โ we handle it with gloves and expertise.
Textile Work We Frame
๐งต Needlepoint
Finished canvas needlepoint stretched over archival foam core, blocked if needed, and mounted with conservation materials before framing. No staples through the work.
โ๏ธ Cross-Stitch & Embroidery
Aida cloth and embroidery hooped or stretched flat, then mounted with archival spacers to prevent glass contact. Mat colors chosen to complement the thread palette.
๐ Clothing & Fabric Pieces
Baby's first outfit, a piece of a wedding dress, a favorite sports jersey โ mounted flat on archival backing with coordinating mats and shadow box depth if needed.
๐ Sports Jerseys
Jerseys pinned and mounted flat in a shadow box frame โ signed or unsigned, game-worn or display. UV-protective glazing prevents fading. See our full jersey framing page.
๐ชก Quilts & Tapestries
Smaller quilts and tapestries mounted with appropriate hanging systems or conservation sleeves. We don't staple, glue, or damage textile heirlooms.
๐๏ธ Handkerchiefs & Lace
Delicate vintage handkerchiefs, lace pieces, and christening garment sections mounted in shadow box frames with archival fabric backing in coordinating colors.
Why Textile Framing Needs a Specialist
- Fabric cannot touch glass โ moisture condensation causes mold. We always use mat spacers or shadow box depth.
- Needlepoint must be blocked first โ if the canvas is distorted, it must be wet-blocked and dried flat before mounting.
- Stretching tension matters โ too tight distorts; too loose sags. Proper textile mounting is a skill.
- Archival materials only โ acid-free backing prevents yellowing and fiber degradation over time.
- UV glazing is critical โ thread colors and fabric dyes are highly sensitive to light damage.
