How much canvas do I need for stretching?
A stretched canvas needs material for the visible face, the sides of the stretcher bars, and the fabric that turns onto the back. Enter the desired face dimensions, bar depth, and extra back allowance to calculate the total fabric needed.
For each dimension: required fabric = finished face + 2 Ă— (bar depth + extra back allowance). The preview illustrates the face and surrounding fabric, without evaluating artwork content near the edges.
Example: a 24 Ă— 36 canvas on 1.5-inch bars
With 2 inches of extra fabric beyond the back edge on each side, you need 31 Ă— 43 inches of fabric. The visible face is 6 square feet; the stretcher perimeter is 120 inches, or 10 linear feet.
Already have a rolled canvas?
Measure the entire fabric and the image area separately. Enter the total fabric in the optional fields to check whether enough material exists for your selected dimensions. A geometric fit does not confirm that the artwork will remain correctly positioned or that the fabric is suitable for stretching.

Frequently asked questions
Is the back allowance the same as bar depth?
No. Bar depth covers the side of the stretcher. The extra back allowance is additional material beyond that edge for the chosen stretching and fastening method.
Does this estimate a stretching price?
No. It prepares dimensions for a quote. Size, canvas condition, bar construction, framing, packing, and delivery affect the final price.
Can I stretch a canvas without blank margins?
Sometimes the image can wrap around the sides, or a different presentation may be needed. A framer must inspect the image placement and material.
Can I rotate the canvas to make it fit?
The tool reports when the total fabric would fit after rotating the fabric dimensions. Confirm that this orientation also works with the actual artwork.
